A CELL ON CHURCH ISLAND, WATERVILLE, AND S. KEVIN'S BED, GLENDALOUGH

A CELL ON CHURCH ISLAND, WATERVILLE, AND S. KEVIN'S BED, GLENDALOUGH

Ireland is rich in caves or rude dwellings reputed to have been the refuges of hermits. Not every hermit is named, and except that the stone building on Church Island, Waterville (bottom), is a monastic cell, there is nothing to connect it with the retreat of any individual. S. Kevin's Bed, Glendalough (top), is in another category, for S. Kevin was one of the most notable of Irish Saints, and the tradition of his life here is supported by a certain amount of evidence.
