GLORIOUS DERWENTWATER, AND THE ISLE ON WHICH S. HERBERT PASSED HIS SOLITARY LIFE

GLORIOUS DERWENTWATER, AND THE ISLE ON WHICH S. HERBERT PASSED HIS SOLITARY LIFE

On the same day and hour as the good S. Cuthbert, the hermit of the Fame Islands, died on Holy Island, his lifelong friend, S. Herbert, reached his end on the island in Dewentwater which Is still called after him. There are three large islands in Derwentwater, and that shown in the centre of the photograph is the one on which S. Herbert passed an uninterrupted life in communion with God...t is a favoured spot. Derwentwater possesses a far gentler beauty than that of S. Cuthbert's retreat. It can claim, in fact, to be the loveliest of all English lakes with its wonderful blend of crag and wooded banks, green islets like gems dotting its fair surface, and romantic mountain background crowned by Skiddaw's crest.
