In the clearing where St. Martin's Lane and Charing Cross Road converge, the Nurse Cavell statue and monument is- specially conspicuous, and, being so, has challenged and evoked more hostile criticism than any of the London memorials, partly on account of the somewhat harshly Teutonic character given to it by the designer, Sir George Frampton, R.A.
