SUBMARINE MEMORIAL TABLET, AND THE FOUNTAIN OF THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION

SUBMARINE MEMORIAL TABLET, AND THE FOUNTAIN OF THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION

A little eastward of Cleopatra's Needle, the tablet in the wall of the Embankment (bottom) pays tribute to the branch of the "silent" service that wrought and suffered almost more perilously than any other. Sir Edwin Lutyens was responsible for the very graceful fountain dedicated to the Royal Naval Division (top), and it is the one memorial in this form in the whole of London. Its position at the Admiralty corner of the Horse Guards Parade is open to objections. It is dwarfed by the height of the adjacent buildings.
