MEMORIAL TO THE TWENTY-FOURTH DIVISION: AN ARTISTIC MONUMENT IN BATTERSEA PARK

MEMORIAL TO THE TWENTY-FOURTH DIVISION: AN ARTISTIC MONUMENT IN BATTERSEA PARK

There are many who remember the remarkable war pictures sent home by Mr. Eric Kennington, then an artist at the front; but his sculpture is mainly a post-war development. The group in this memorial to the 24th Division reveals a good deal of the New Thought in sculpture which Rodin initiated and Mr. Epstein and others have promulgated. A severe simplicity in the modelling is the keynote of these three figures, and for ornament one must look to the pedestal, where the incised designs are intricate. The 24th Division was the last of those raised by Lord Kitchener In 1914-15 to duplicate the fourteen divisions of the Territorial Army. Our photographs show the monument from different positions. Mr, Kennineton gave this memorial.
