THE MEMORIAL BY JACK STRAW'S CASTLE, HAMPSTEAD HEATH

THE MEMORIAL BY JACK STRAW'S CASTLE, HAMPSTEAD HEATH

Hampstead Borough has chosen an historic site for its simple obelisk, for, as the photograph shows, it stands opposite the entrance to the Hotel, Hampstead Heath, made famous by Charles Dickens when it was known as Jack Straw's Castle This spot is still as Washington Irving put it, a favourite resort of citizens when rurally inclined; and the memorial, year in. year out, must be seen by: countless thousands of people. The monument was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield, R.A., and was unveiled in 1922
