Southampton, successor of the Roman port that lay farther upstream, was one of the first towns to be walled after the Conquest, and the photograph shows a portion of its lofty Norman ramparts. In places these are forty feet high, and the circuit of a mile and a quarter, though no longer complete, is none the less impressive
