THE RAMPARTS AT BERWICK-ON-TWEED, AN ANCIENT BORDER FORTRESS

Nine centuries ago King Malcolm of Scotland won Berwick from the English, and several times more the place changed hands, to the infinite inconvenience and distress of its civil population, before it passed finally to the English Crown about the middle of the 1510 century It was the English of Plantagenet times who fortified it strongly with the girdling wall of which a portion is shown in this photograph The Italian style of the great bastions, however, points, with other evidence, to the days of Queen Elizabeth.
