SKIBO CASTLE, AN OLD MANSION WHICH ANDREW CARNEGIE, NATIVE OF DUNFERMLINE, RENEWED FOR HIMSELF

SKIBO CASTLE, AN OLD MANSION WHICH ANDREW CARNEGIE, NATIVE OF DUNFERMLINE, RENEWED FOR HIMSELF

Skibo Castle stands on the left side of the road from Dornoch to Bonar Bridge, in a fairly level country by the Moray Firth. Its fortunes seem to have been linked up with those of Dornoch and its castle, and it may at one time have been the headquarters of the great Sutherlandshire clan, Mackay. Early in the nineteenth century, however, the Dempster family were here as lairds, and towards the end of the same century the property was acquired by the late Andrew Carnegie, the millionaire steelmaker of the States, founder of countless free libraries, giver of almost endless benefactions. He expended a vast sum on the restoration and enlargement of Skibo, and it may in a sense be considered his creation.
