CRYPT OF GLAMIS CASTLE, AND THE ANCIENT CHAPEL AT NEWBATTLE ABBEY

CRYPT OF GLAMIS CASTLE, AND THE ANCIENT CHAPEL AT NEWBATTLE ABBEY

Glamis Castle, ancestral home of the Duchess of York, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, dates in its present form from the end of the seventeenth century. But portions of it are very much older; the Crypt (bottom) is a survival of the feudal age, and more than one grim or ghostly legend is attached to the high square tower. History says that Newbattle Abbey, the seat of the Marquess of Lothian was founded by David I in 1140, and the private chapel shown in the photograph (top) is a relic of the original buildings
