STERN ABOYNE CASTLE, AND THE MAGNIFICENCE OF MOUNT STUART

STERN ABOYNE CASTLE, AND THE MAGNIFICENCE OF MOUNT STUART

Marquesses of Huntly have dwelt at Aboyne Castle (bottom), on the Dee, for centuries, but the somewhat stern-looking building of the photograph is comparatively modern. Mount Stuart (top), built about fifty years ago by the late Marquess of Bute is the successor of an older mansion erected by the second earl in 1718. The present-day magnificence both of its interior and exterior is in striking contrast to the austerity said to have characterised its predecessor.
