THE ANCIENT TOWN OF BURFORD ON THE WINDRUSH, WHERE TIME HAS WROUGHT FEW CHANGES

A very attractive little town is Burford, by the side of the river Windrush, about four miles beyond Oxford. No railway has come to disturb its peace, and the houses of its main street, many of them of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with mullioned windows and spandrelled doorways, are much as they were in the days of the fourth George. Then it was that Burford enjoyed its last spell of activity, for the Bibury races were held in its neighbourhood, and drew the " quality " to quarters in the old town. The church spire seen on the right of the photograph is that of S. John the Baptist, a Norman foundation. Near by is Burford Priory, a Renaissance mansion that has been recently restored.
