ROMANTIC MONNOW BRIDGE AT MONMOUTH: EASTGATE, GLOUCESTER

ROMANTIC MONNOW BRIDGE AT MONMOUTH: EASTGATE, GLOUCESTER

By Monnow Street and the arch of the red sandstone Monnow bridge (bottom) our road leaves Monmouth, and no more romantic exit could be made. The arch has often served in the defence of the border city, the last occasion being in 1839, when the gatehouse was closed and its walls loopholed for muskets against a threatened attack by Chartists. Guildhall on the right and market hall on the left face each other in Eastgate, Gloucester (top), one of that city's most famous streets.
