WINCHESTER'S CROSS: TOWN AND COUNTY MEMORIALS AT EXETER

WINCHESTER'S CROSS: TOWN AND COUNTY MEMORIALS AT EXETER

Winchester's Memorial (bottom) represents not only that city, but the county of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It is inscribed with the names of local regiments and ships of war. Exeter has both county and town memorials, the former (top left) standing on the green opposite the lovely West Front of the cathedral; this granite cross was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The town memorial (top right), in Queen Street, designed by Mr. John Angell of Exeter, is unusual in that one of the attendant statues at the base represents a prisoner of war.
