THE SEMICIRCULAR MEMORIALS AT PLYMOUTH AND PORTSMOUTH

Standing on classic ground, at the outskirts of the Hoc, Plymouth's War Memorial (bottom), save for its bronze figure, is built entirely of Cornish granite In front of the figure, beneath a covering stone, is a small vault wherein has been placed a Roll of Honour in a leaden casket. The names of more than 6,000 men are inscribed on the panels of the Portsmouth Memorial (top). The central pylon and the grimly realistic figures on their pedestals at the terminals of the enclosure give distinction to this design.
