NORTHAMPTON'S MEMORIAL: THE ARCH AT LEICESTER, AND LOUGHBOROUGH'S CARILLON TOWER

NORTHAMPTON'S MEMORIAL: THE ARCH AT LEICESTER, AND LOUGHBOROUGH'S CARILLON TOWER

Very simple is the lay-out of Northampton's War Memorial (bottom) within the precincts of an ancient parish church bordering a busy street. Sir Edwin Lutyens's arch in Victoria Park, Leicester (top right), makes a strong appeal by reason both of its monumental quality and its commanding position at the highest point of Lancaster Road. It possesses dignity and harmoniousness with its surroundings. The tower and carillon at Loughborough (top left), built of red brick and Portland stone, is probably the most unique war memorial in the country.
