S. GEORGE AT NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, AND THE CARLISLE, LINCOLN AND YORK MEMORIALS

S. GEORGE AT NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, AND THE CARLISLE, LINCOLN AND YORK MEMORIALS

In the grass spaces of Eldon Square, Newcastle, the bronze equestrian group of S. George slaying the Dragon (bottom left) makes a strong local appeal, for S. George is the patron saint of the Northumberland Fusiliers. The massive Cenotaph in Rickerby Park, Carlisle (bottom right), commemorates the men of Cumberland and Westmorland. Very beautifully wrought in hard white Ancaster stone is the Late Gothic design at Lincoln (top left). At York the Cross of Victory (top right) was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.
