PALLADIAN VILLA AT CHISWICK; A HAYMARKET SHOP AND BOODLE'S CLUB

PALLADIAN VILLA AT CHISWICK; A HAYMARKET SHOP AND BOODLE'S CLUB

Chiswick House (bottom), remodelled in 1730 in the manner of Palladio's celebrated Villa Capra, near Vicenza, was the joint work of the Earl of Burlington, at that time its owner, and William Kent. The tobacconist's shop in the Haymarket (top left) dates from 1720 and its quaint bow-windowed front is the only one of the period remaining in London. The shop was frequented by Beau Brummel and his friends of the fashionable world. Boodle's Club (top right), in St. James's Street, designed as a club for country gentlemen, dates from 1762
