TWO SUSSEX MEMORIALS: EASTBOURNE'S VICTORY AND THE OBELISK ON HASTINGS PARADE

The photograph of the memorial at Eastbourne (bottom) shows a winged statue of Victory mounted on a pedestal that has almost the proportions of a cenotaph. Since, seemingly, a site by the sea was not available, the monument has been placed in the centre of a spacious yet fairly quiet thoroughfare within the town; it stands at the corner of Cornfield Road. The Hastings memorial (top), an obelisk with a globular headpiece, is on the Parade, that long sea front that stretches westward from the old town towards St. Leonards.
