HOW ROYAL WINDSOR GUARDS THE THAMES IN BATTLEMENTED MAGNIFICENCE

HOW ROYAL WINDSOR GUARDS THE THAMES IN BATTLEMENTED MAGNIFICENCE

From the North Terrace on the left our view sweeps down the majestic gradual descent of the castle's line, past the central Round Tower, and St. George's Chapel, till it is flanked to the right by the dark, steep roof of the Curfew Tower. This chalk cliff above the river was certainly well chosen as the site for the supreme royal dwelling of the English kings and, incidentally, a guard to London. Windsor Castle is an association of many styles and dates, but from the Buckinghamshire side of the river the older and the newer structures, blended by the distance, make a picture which has no peer throughout the land. There is no castle to compare with Windsor in the possession of that individual quality which one calls, unhesitatingly, "royal."
