HAUNTS OF ANCIENT PEACE AND MODERN BUSTLE AT EAST GRINSTEAD

In the coffee-room of the Dorset Arms (top), a favourite with motorists, the walls are hung with old prints and from the back windows Ashdown Forest makes a beautiful view. There are some half-timbered houses to be seen in the town besides its finest possession, the Sackville College, founded by a former Earl of Dorset. The old walls embrace a quadrangle of turf, and within are a chapel, a dining hall, whose fireplace bears the date 1619, and the warden's apartments. The foundation provides for six sisters and five brothers.
