HELSTON'S FAMOUS FURRY DANCE OF GREAT AGE AND UNCERTAIN ORIGIN

HELSTON'S FAMOUS FURRY DANCE OF GREAT AGE AND UNCERTAIN ORIGIN

The Furry Dance is rather an institution than a dance. The steps may be varied to taste so long as the general ritual is observed. The main feature of this is that every house and shop should stand open and that the dancers be able to dance into the premises and out again. The annual custom of dancing round the town is celebrated with a decoration of bunting and green branches in the streets, the branches the most faithful reproduction of the old spirit, forThe Furry Dance must have its origin in a thanksgiving ceremonial for the coming of spring. Its origin is probably Celtic, though the Roman Floralia may have some connexion with it. May 8 is the festal day.
