NEARING THE BORDER ON THE GREAT NORTH ROAD: NEWCASTLE AND BERWICK

Passing through Newcastle we encounter a fine Norman Keep, and, in front of it, the 13th century Blackgate, whose upper part, altered in the 17th century, houses a collection of Roman antiquities. Between the two buildings runs the main line to Edinburgh, a striking anachronism. The keep was put up by Henry II between the years 1172-77.
