APPLEBY'S GRIM NORMAN KEEP

APPLEBY'S GRIM NORMAN KEEP

Henry I granted the province of Carlisle, which included the barony of Appleby, to Ranulph Meschin, who built Appleby Castle. His keep still remains, surrounded by a double moat. The rest of the castle was altered in the seventeenth century.
