STOCKS, COUNTERFEIT AND REAL, OF SUSSEX AND ESSEX

STOCKS, COUNTERFEIT AND REAL, OF SUSSEX AND ESSEX

One of the things to see when touring Lewes Castle is the replica of the stocks which once punished the more irresponsible members of the parish of Horsted Parva. The whipping post, however, is the original and genuine one. The right-hand photograph was taken on the village green of Havering atte Bower, which is about three miles to the north of Romford and on the edge of what once was Hainault Forest. Saxon Kings, including Edward the Confessor, are said to have had a residence at Havering. Stocks and whipping post stand under a fine tree.
