AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY THAT WAS THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF LORD BYRON

AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY THAT WAS THE ANCESTRAL HOME OF LORD BYRON

During the early part of Byron's life his ancestral home at Newstead Abbey, eight miles outside Nottingham, was let, but on leaving Cambridge he settled there and was in residence at intervals between 1806 and 1816. At first he had the unpleasant fancy that the portraits of his forefathers on the walls would leave their frames to haunt him. The Abbey was founded in 1170 and passed at the Dissolution to the Byron family, who held it till it was sold in 1818. The upper photograph shows the poet's bed-room, little altered since his day.
