WHERE A DOCTOR FROM CALNE CARVED A HORSE ON CHERHILL DOWNS

If after leaving Marlborough we keep straight on at Beckhampton instead of going off to the left for the road to Bath via Devizes, we are on the more direct route through Calne. A few miles before reaching that town the road goes across very open and exposed land with a down, looking especially prominent by reason of its isolation, on our left hand, beyond flat, unenclosed fields. The white horse was cut in 1780 by a certain Dr. Alsop. On the top of the down is Oldbury Castle, a British camp with an area of 25 acres.
