ELIZABETHAN MARKET HALL AND THE UNICORN IN WYLE COP

ELIZABETHAN MARKET HALL AND THE UNICORN IN WYLE COP

The Market Square is on the south side of the High Street, and at the farther end is the Old Market Hall, so-called to distinguish it from the New Market House at the top of the street called Mardol. The Old Hall was put up, according to an inscription above the northern arch, at which we are looking, in 1595. Turning out of the other end of the square to the right, we proceed down the High Street and eventually reach Wyle Cop. At the bottom of the hill is the old Unicorn, one of Shrewsbury's most noted hostelrics since the sixteenth century.
