WHERE TITHES OF EARTH'S PRODUCE WERE STORED FOR MOTHER CHURCH

WHERE TITHES OF EARTH'S PRODUCE WERE STORED FOR MOTHER CHURCH

Abbotsbury (top) a mile or two inland from the Dorset coast west of Portland Bill, preserves a Benedictine abbey whose ruins include this fifteenth-century tithe-barn. It is immense now, and only half of it remains complete. It is to be imagined what it was like when entire and what the riches of the monastery were which could fill it with the good things of the fruitful Dorset soil. Below are the barns at Middlet'on (left) in Gloucester, and Glastonbury, the latter with its beautiful gateway still intact.
