HUGE STORE-HOUSE FOR THE TITHES OF TISBURY IN WILTSHIRE

HUGE STORE-HOUSE FOR THE TITHES OF TISBURY IN WILTSHIRE

Tisbury lies on a by-road joining the main Salisbury-Shaftesbury road to the Salisbury-Mere road, which latter it meets at Hindon. The tithe barn, save for its thatched roof, is built as solidly as a parish church, with sturdy stone buttresses. Light is admitted by narrow slits in the masonry, one between each pair of buttresses. Such a great building, set aside for the storage of provender, must have been even more imposing in the days when possessions within the protection of the Church were all that was really safe.
