ONE OF ENGLAND'S OLDEST AND MOST POPULAR GAMES IN PRACTICE TO-DAY

The fact that Southampton has maintained a bowling-green since 1299 is indicative of the antiquity of the game in England. At one time the playing of bowls interfered with the practice of archery and was frowned on by the law. Henry VIII played, and even more famous was Sir Francis Drake, whom we see being impersonated at Goole Pageant (top left). Here are also the Middlesex County Bowling Association holding its championship meeting at the Brownswood Club in Green Lanes', London, and the Kent Tournament (bottom) being held at Deal.
