THE PLOUGH, CLAPHAM, AND THE GREEN MAN, WHERE THE ROAD GOES BY WIMBLEDON COMMON

THE PLOUGH, CLAPHAM, AND THE GREEN MAN, WHERE THE ROAD GOES BY WIMBLEDON COMMON

At the Plough (top), which stands at the apex of Clapham Common, the way to Portsmouth branches to the right. The Elizabethan front of the Plough is a modern reconstruction and a reminder of the antiquity of this site as a place of refreshment through the centuries At the Green Man (bottom left) the two lines of approach, via Fulham or the Clapham Road, converge and become the Portsmouth Road, skirting Wimbledon Common. One of the by-roads across it, and the windmill, appear in the lower right-hand photograph.
