ALTERNATIVE ROUTES TO PORTSMOUTH: VIA KINGSTON MARKET OR KINGSTON

By the old route to Portsmouth the traveller comes through Norbiton to Kingston. The market-place still keeps its old shape. In the background rises the tower, rebuilt in red brick in 1708, of the fifteenth century parish church of All Saints. In the foreground is the Kings' Stone. The Saxon Chronicle says that seven English kings were crowned at Kingston, and tradition has it that this was the stone on which the ceremony took place.
