FOURTEENTH CENTURY GATE-HOUSE OF BATTLE ABBEY

William the Conqueror, in fulfilling a vow made before Senlac fight, afterwards put up an abbey on the hill where the English had fought so hardly around their standard. The high altar of the church was erected over the very spot where Harold fell. On the Dissolution, Battle was not deserted, but turned into a private residence The gateway is late Decorated, built in 1350.
