INTIMATE REMNANTS OF ROMAN LIFE TO BE FOUND IN THE MUSEUMS OF BRITAIN

INTIMATE REMNANTS OF ROMAN LIFE TO BE FOUND IN THE MUSEUMS OF BRITAIN

Fragments of fortresses, private houses, amphitheatres, remind us of the scope of the Roman occupation. These move our wonder. But it is discoveries such as the above photographs show which make history real. A helmet (Brit. Museum) once handled and put on by some swaggering legionary; a money box (York Museum) still containing someone's savings; and glass cinerary urns (Brit. Museum) to hold the ashes of cremated dead - all these odds and ends, almost pathetic in their forgotten intimacy, make this long-dead life personal and human to us.

Pictures shows:

  • Tile of Roman Roof
  • Money Box from Lincoln
  • Marble Funeral Tablet
  • Bronze Statuette of Mars
  • The Pavement of a Villa
  • Bronze Deities of the Week
  • Glass Funnel and Cinerary Urns
  • Bowl of Tinted Glass
  • Helmets of Bronze
