MEN OF THE COASTGUARD SERVICE WHICH ORIGINATED IN THE PREVENTIVE SYSTEM

In 1831 the Revenue Coastguard was formed to deal with smuggling. About twenty-five years later the Admiralty took control and the Coastguards became a naval reserve. They were still called upon to suppress smuggling, but to the public they were better known for their fine life-saving work. Above we see the rocket life-saving apparatus, which in this case is carried on a horse-drawn carriage, It comprises a rocket and line which, fired over a distressed ship, enables the crew to haul out and rig the tackle of a breeches buoy
