CUCKMERE HAVEN, SCENE OF ANCIENT AND MODERN SMUGGLING AND THE SMUGGLERS' RETREAT, HYTHE

The river Cuckmere finds the sea between Seaford and Eastbourne, and in the roadstead of Cuckmere Haven many a lugger ran her cargo from France. In 1923 an attempt to land a cargo of brandy here, where it was to be put on a motor lorry for London was discovered The smuggler was a London man, and was so seasick on the voyage that he had to beg the skipper of the fishing vessel he had chartered to put into Newhaven, which is a Customs port. And thus he was caught. Above is the old house at Hythe called "The Smugglers' Retreat."
