New Radnor which was new Long Since

This photograph of the entrance to New Radnor shows the fine Gothic monument raised to Sir George Cornewall Lewis, statesman and man of letters, who lived at Harpton outside the town. Among the public positions he held was that of Home Secretary to the Palmerston government. New Radnor was " new " when the county of Radnorshire was formed in the time of Henry VIII, and earlier still it possessed a Marcher castle now vanished. The chronicles tell that Owen Glendower stormed it and burnt the village.
