MAGDALEN TOWER, WHERE CHORISTERS SING ON MAY MORNING

MAGDALEN TOWER, WHERE CHORISTERS SING ON MAY MORNING

Beside Magdalen Bridge at the end of the High Street stands the tall tower of Magdalen, overlooking the Cherwell. It was begun in 1402, completed in 1501, and is built in a style about half-way between Early and Late Perpendicular. The grace of its form is due to each succeeding course being very slightly narrower than the one below it, and thus lightness is added to a structure whose height might have led the builders into undue massiveness. It is fromthe summit of this tower that the Magdalen choristerssing every May Morning at sunrise.
