THE ORIGINAL FOLKESTONE: DOWN IN THE OLD FISHMARKET

THE ORIGINAL FOLKESTONE: DOWN IN THE OLD FISHMARKET

As at Hastings so at Folkestone, an old member of the Cinque Ports has preserved some of its individuality in spite of the growth round it of a large modern seaside resort. To most people Folkestone means the harbour for the Boulogne boat, or the pier and the famous Leas. But down in the valley, leaving summer visitors to the heights, is the old port, now a fishing community like old Hastings and having an air of village life about it. Even the houses are clinker built, plank laid over plank, like a fisherman's boat, and fish-boxes litter the street.
