MAGNIFICENT GREAT HALL OF ELTHAM PALACE

MAGNIFICENT GREAT HALL OF ELTHAM PALACE

Of the once great palace of Eltham, now on the south-eastern outskirts of London, only the Great Hall remains. These rafters and beams were up m the latter part of the fifteenth century-nearly four hundred and fifty years ago-and so fine was the workmanship that it remains almost intact. Henry III visited Eltham Palace at Christmas, 1270, and its succeeding palace, of which the hall is the remainder, passed back to the Crown at the Restoration, having been confiscated by Parliament. The rest supplied building material for the neighbourhood
