HAMPTON COURT PALACE: THE EAST FRONT AND THE LION GATES

HAMPTON COURT PALACE: THE EAST FRONT AND THE LION GATES

It was about the year 1692 that Wren finished the great East Front of the palace for William III. In the centre, opposite the fountain, the wall is faced with Portland stone and richly decorated. In front of this three broad paths, flanked by yew trees, radiate outwards in such a way that seen from the palace they make a W, and from the other end an M-the initials of William and Mary, who had this garden laid out in the Dutch style. The Lion Gates (top) were erected by Queen Anne, and constitute one of the chief entrances to the Palace Gardens.
