GLOUCESTER'S ABBEY CHURCH MADE A CATHEDRAL AT THE DISSOLUTION

GLOUCESTER'S ABBEY CHURCH MADE A CATHEDRAL AT THE DISSOLUTION

As early as 681 a religious house was founded at Gloucester, and in 1022 Benedictine monks built a monastery and church. Abbot Serlo constructed a new abbey church about 1100, and it is this edifice which forms the core of the present building. But this Norman work has been covered over with fine Perpendicular embellishments, which were added when the monks beganto receive an enormous revenue from the offerings of pilgrims who came to visit the tomb of Edward II after his atrocious murder in Berkeley Castle, 1327. The tower was built in 1450.
