S. Davids Cathedral: South Corner of Screen

S. Davids Cathedral: South Corner of Screen

This screen was designed a little before the middle of the fourteenth century, and, belonging as it does to the most prosperous age of British Gothic, is probably the most elaborate, work of its kind in the kingdom. Bishop Gower was its author, and, like the rest of the achievements of this remarkable prelate-artist, it is stamped with his strong individuality. In the niched figure of the saint, seen in the photograph, there is a breadth of modelling, and a certain simple grandeur, that epitomises the whole spirit of this great Welsh cathedral.
