TOWER OF WATERFORD'S CITY WALLS AND THE CASTLE OF ATHLONE

TOWER OF WATERFORD'S CITY WALLS AND THE CASTLE OF ATHLONE

Reginald's Tower (bottom) or the Ring Tower, as it is also called, once formed the north-east angle of the fortifications of Waterford and dates from 1003. It was restored in 1819. The original Danish Settlement was a three-sided enclosure with its base here, along the Quay which is washed by the river Suir. Athlone Castle (top) still has its ancient keep, part of the castle put up in the time of King John. The way to it over the Shannon is by a bridge, built on the site of one which witnessed stubb.orn fighting in 1691.
