Bangor, the Foundation of S. Deiniol

Bangor, the Foundation of S. Deiniol

The original church of its founder, S. Deiniol, was destroyed by the Normans in a.d. 1071, and replaced by a structure which was in turn demolished by the Welsh during the wars of Edward I. It was re-erected by Bishop Anian at the close of the thirteenth century. The interior (bottom) of the present church is not specially impressive ; but both interior and exterior (top) were well restored by Sir Gilbert Scott, and the Chapter House contains historic treasures, notably the pontifical of Bishop Anian ordaining the famous "Use of Bangor."
