DUNFERMLINE ABBEY, A SHRINE OF SCOTTISH ROYALTY

DUNFERMLINE ABBEY, A SHRINE OF SCOTTISH ROYALTY

Malcolm Canmore and Queen Margaret founded Dunfermline Abbey about 1072, and from that date it superseded lona as the burial place of the Scottish Royalty. The most illustrious of the kings sleeping here is Robert Bruce, who lies beneath the pulpit of the new church, which was built at the east end of the old church, in 1818. The two portions, old and new, are cut off from each other the latter being now used as the parish church. The old nave was built in 1150 by David I, replacing the original structure of Malcolm
