NEW PAUL'S CROSS COMMEMORATES THE OLD

In 1910 this monument was set up to remind Londoners of their once famous "Paul's Cross," of the days when S. Paul's Cathedral was "Paul's," and a great Gothic building finer than Salisbury or Norwich. Paul's Cross consisted of an outside pulpit with a cross over it. In the days when Bonner and Ridley were bishops of London and the quickly succeeding reigns of Edward VI, Mary and Elizabeth made religious changes, Paul's Cross was the scene of regular Sunday preaching The Puritans had it removed in 1643.
