Landmark of Battle of Mortimers Cross, Near Leominister

Mortimer's Cross, scene of a Yorkist victory, is on the River Lugg, about five miles from Leominster. The stump of an old oak-tree, shown in the photograph between two standing oaks, is known as the Battle Oak. About 4,000 men of the Yorkist and Lancastrian armies were killed in this fight, which, as matters turned out, was a somewhat barren victory for Edward Mortimer. He avenged, however, to some extent his father's death at Sandal, and his success was at least a step towards securing his own uneasy throne as Edward IV.
