VILLAGE CROSSES OF SOMERSET AND SUSSEX, AND THE GREAT CROSS OF KELLS

VILLAGE CROSSES OF SOMERSET AND SUSSEX, AND THE GREAT CROSS OF KELLS

Muchelney, Somerset, has restored its old village cross (bottom left). Crowcombe (bottom right) is a village among the lovely Quantock Hills, also in Somerset, and has two crosses, one in the churchyard and another, a market cross which we see above. At Alfriston in Sussex (top left) is the last village cross surviving in the south-east counties. It was badly damaged by Canadian troops during the War. One of the most famous crosses of the British Isles is in Ireland at Kells (top right). It is about nine feet high and carved all over with scriptural and military figures.
